Mentech Innovation was founded in 2016 by Erwin Meinders to address an important unmet need in mental healthcare. While being a volunteer at Severinus, a care organization for mentally disabled people in the Netherlands, he witnessed the challenges of limited verbal communication capabilities in daily life. His buddy Patrick, a person with a severe mental disability, cannot talk or express pain. One day, his wringing shoes caused pain and discomfort, but this became only clear when after a lot of stress his shoes were removed. This situation inspired Erwin to develop a sensor-based system to give Patrick a voice.
Patrick is not an exception. Many people with a mental disability or dementia suffer from limited verbal communication capabilities and are often not capable to express their emotions or feelings.
Mentech Innovation develops an emotion artificial intelligence platform to sense and regulate emotions, ultimately to improve the quality of life and happiness of vulnerable people. Currently our team consists of 25 motivated data scientists, software and hardware engineers, behavioral experts healthcare technologists, and our is still expanding!
We care for vulnerable people in our society, such as people with a mental disability or dementia. We believe that technology can be used for better sensing and regulation of emotions, thereby providing a voice to people with limited verbal communication capabilities. This will lead to increased happiness, quality of life and reduced costs of care.
“Compassion is the sometimes fatal capacity for feeling what it is like to live inside somebody else’s skin. It’s the knowledge that there can never really be any peace and joy for me until there is peace and joy finally for you too.“ (Frederick Buechner)
