2015: How it started
As a volunteer at care organisation Severinus, for people with intellectual disabilities, Erwin Meinders has experienced that people with complex care needs are often unable to express their emotions adequately.
As a volunteer at care organisation Severinus, for people with intellectual disabilities, Erwin Meinders has experienced that people with complex care needs are often unable to express their emotions adequately.
This inspired him to develop a smart sensor system to recognise tension and emotions. Hence, Mentech was founded in 2016 to give a voice to vulnerable people with misunderstood behaviour.
Sensor-based stress measurement, is it possible? Together with Severinus, we investigated the feasibility of stress detection with sensors.
A number of healthcare institutions believe in this solution and are funding the first prototype of the emotion recognition platform with the founders.
In 2019, we will receive our first investment from the BSF! This will allow us to start the pilot study with 10 healthcare institutions.
After intensive further development and testing, the HUME was born. A system that can recognise stress based on sensors and artificial intelligence. Together with 10 healthcare institutions and the LUMC, we scientifically validated this according to a protocol that was medically ethically tested by the VU-MC.
By 2021, the HUME will be medically certified (MDR), making it ready for use in long-term care. By the end of 2021, the HUME will already be implemented at 20 care institutions in the Netherlands and Belgium. We will also start pilots to measure stress in care staff and its impact on the client.
More and more healthcare facilities are starting to use HUME and the impact stories keep pouring in. For example, we see a 50% reduction in stress among clients, resulting in a 40% reduction in fixations. This makes both clients and staff happier and there is less wastage of care staff. HUME thus contributes to a structural solution for long-term care.
Meanwhile, every day we work with a young and driven team of about 30 young professionals to further develop and implement the smart sensor system, the HUME, in healthcare institutions. We have a hands-on mentality, switch quickly and are all intrinsically motivated to cause fundamental change in healthcare. Will you be joining us soon to work on our mission?
