29 January 2024 News

In 2023, our partners, including Lunet zorg, ORO, and Ipse de Brugge, achieved a milestone by integrating HUME into their care offerings. This initiative, aimed at the care paths for EVB, LVB, and Child, Youth and Family, started with four HUME kits and has been successfully expanded to ten systems in 2024 due to its success.

The implementation of HUME within this consortium has led to remarkable results, including a significant reduction in signaling behavior among clients. This success underscores the value of HUME in providing personalized care by enabling early stress detection and facilitating adjustments in care provision based on objective data.

Practical applications and changes

Thanks to the insights gained from HUME, our partners have been able to make significant adjustments to the daily routines of clients. These include reorganizing meal times, providing individual attention at critical moments, and using tools such as timers to improve day structure. All these measures aim to reduce stress and enhance the quality of life.

The consortium plans to continue and further expand the use of HUME within different care paths. There are plans to structurally integrate HUME into the care offerings, with new initiatives such as a pilot with Psychomotor Therapy (PMT) being explored in 2024.

Giving clients a voice

HUME has played a crucial role in giving a voice to clients who are unable to express their well-being and stress levels themselves. By detecting subtle physical changes, HUME enables care providers to intervene proactively and optimize care provision.

We look forward to continuing our collaboration with care providers and further supporting the implementation of HUME, to continuously improve and innovate care for people with disabilities.

Severinus-HUME.jpg

12 June 2023 News

Severinus offers daily treatment and guidance for children aged 0 to 18 with developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, or severe multiple disabilities through its Children’s Day Center (KDC). Children can be themselves up to five days a week, under the care of a multidisciplinary team. Lieke enjoys attending. Lieke has a very rare chromosomal abnormality, trisomy 9 in mosaic form. Lieke is extremely active, and her behavior isn’t always clear to her caregiver Francy from Severinus and her parents. Sometimes it seems like restlessness or dissatisfaction, but sometimes it also appears to be enthusiasm. Together, Francy and mother Linda wanted to use HUME to investigate the meaning of Lieke’s restlessness and discover whether this behavior was a stress response or a form of processing. In addition, they used HUME to investigate which adjustments contribute to reducing her restlessness.

HUME is an intelligent sensor system from Mentech. HUME determines a person’s stress level based on measured heart rate, sweat production, and movement. This is measured using sensors such as a chest strap, patch, or smart sock. The stress indicator is displayed as a traffic light on a tablet or smartphone. This provides the client or healthcare worker with an early warning of tension buildup. HUME is part of the treatment for clients with difficult-to-understand behavior at the Severinus care institution.

In the beginning, Francy had to figure out how to interpret HUME’s tension notifications, as they indicated both low and high tension. Francy also observed when HUME gave relaxation notifications in the app. This way, she could clearly see the effect of interventions in HUME’s stress notifications. She discovered that walking sometimes caused restlessness for Lieke. On the other hand, the standing table (a construction that allows Lieke to stand independently) visibly provided relaxation, as it gave her an overview of the group. Lieke prefers to maintain closeness or connection with Francy; she is calm and explores her surroundings. Francy is enthusiastic about using HUME: “I am surprised that I have received so much new information, which allows me to form a much more conscious view of the behavior of clients like Lieke.”

The HUME results confirmed mother Linda’s insights. “I can trust myself because what I see is accurate thanks to HUME,” says Linda. As an example, she mentions music as an intervention for restlessness. Music has always been a means to relax Lieke. Linda took Lieke to listen to live music while wearing HUME. The whole time, Lieke was “green” and relaxed. On Saturday, while playing at XieJe and during Lieke’s stay at the sleepover farm, Linda and Francy received tension notifications. Lieke became very excited by all the children and activities around her. Many enjoyable stimuli, which Lieke cannot regulate herself. By using music and watching Juf Roos, Linda and Francy saw the tension notifications significantly decrease. The music intervention was successful, making Lieke more relaxed.

New client onboarding

Humanitas DMH provides sheltered care and support for people with intellectual or multiple disabilities. Mentech supports various Humanitas DMH care locations with the intelligent sensor system HUME to address complex care issues in clients with misunderstood behavior. For example, personal support worker Matthijs Batenburg employed HUME to onboard a client with a severe intellectual disability who had lived with his parents for 30 years.

Innovative sock

HUME is an intelligent sensor system developed by Mentech. The system measures stress and stress buildup using advanced wearables, such as a sock, and visualizes this data on a clear dashboard. This provides insight into a client’s stress level. Thanks to timely warnings, support workers can intervene more quickly and prevent escalations. Understanding stress buildup also helps employees better cope with stressful situations, ultimately preventing burnout.

Lack of daily structure causes stress

Under Mentech’s guidance, the support group’s caregivers started working with HUME. By using the system daily, it quickly became clear when the client was experiencing stress. The client remained calm during weekdays, but stress increased during weekends. Matthijs suspected that the lack of a fixed daily structure and clarity during weekends led to stress. During weekdays, he was able to provide a daily structure and clarity. As a result, Matthijs introduced a fixed weekend day program to offer more structure.

New insights thanks to HUME

The fixed weekend day program demonstrably led to less stress. HUME showed a significant decrease in tension. Matthijs confirms: “The client is noticeably less tense during weekends due to the provided clarity and structure. With these new insights, we can guide and support the client even better in their daily needs.” Less tension also means fewer escalations, which is a significant gain for both the client and the support worker. This creates more room to further tailor care to the client’s needs. Matthijs: “I recommend my colleagues also start working with HUME, and that’s possible!” Humanitas DMH invests in a long-term collaboration with Mentech to structurally improve the quality of care.

Philadelphia.jpg

10 April 2023 News

The HUME, an innovative technology consisting of a smart sock and an app, offers healthcare professionals at Philadelphia insight into the tension buildup in residents. This helps staff better understand residents’ behavior and prevent escalation.

At the Philadelphia care institution, caregiver Eline and her colleagues were looking for a solution for a resident who sometimes exhibited unexpected biting behavior. Their manager suggested using HUME technology. This technology uses a smart sock and an app to gain insight into tension buildup in residents, allowing their behavior to be better understood and potential escalations to be prevented.

Following a pilot with HUME, Eline and her colleagues are now able to detect when the resident is tense earlier and respond more effectively. They discovered that leafing through a magazine is an effective way for this resident to reduce stress during the bus ride to and from day-care activities. Eline enthusiastically shares, “We see in the app that she is much less tense. The day-care staff also report that she arrives differently.”

The HUME technology not only has a positive effect on the resident but also contributes to the well-being of caregivers and other stakeholders. By gaining insight into residents’ tension buildup, caregivers can better anticipate situations and prevent escalations.
